Why cooking and eating together still matters
In a world that moves fast, where processed food is everywhere and screens compete for our attention, cooking and sitting down to eat together is starting to feel like a small act of rebellion. And honestly? It’s one I think is worth holding onto.
Many of us spend more time scrolling than chatting, more time online than face to face. It’s no surprise that our social connections can feel a little worn, a little frayed around the edges. But it needn’t be like that.
Research from sociologists, psychologists, and nutritionists tell us that preparing and sharing food are among the best ways to build “social glue” and emotional bonds.
It doesn’t have to be done with your immediate family. It could be friends, neighbours, chosen family, classmates, or even a room full of people you’ve never met before. What matters is the togetherness.
The Community Cook Project was started for that same reason. It’s built on a simple formula—cook together, eat together, share stories.
Storytelling is at the heart of what we do. We teach kids how to cook, and then we let them do what food is meant to do best: bring people together. It turns cooking into something more than just following a recipe—it becomes a way to connect, to laugh, to listen, and to learn about one another.
During my classes i’ve been privileged to see how cooking together can lift anxiety from a rough day/week at school, and how it can give kids confidence to be who they are – everyone is welcome at our table.
The idea isn’t new. Humans have always gathered around food and stories. For thousands of years, meals have been where knowledge was passed down, relationships were built, and communities were strengthened.
Our tastes, our histories, our worries and our joys —they all have a place at the table. The table is where we’re reminded what we share is actually listened to, while what makes each of us unique is celebrated.
So if you’ve ever felt a bit disconnected, get in touch, book a class and pull up a chair. There’s always good food to eat and room at the table.
